Union Volleyball Falls in Three Sets to Top AAC Team Reinhardt

 BARBOURVILLE, Ky. The Union Commonwealth University women's volleyball team (7-16, 7-6 AAC) fell to Reinhardt (22-4, 13-0 AAC) Friday night at Robsion Arena, 3-0.

Last season, the two teams met once, with Reinhardt sweeping Union 3-0 at home. This season, the result was the same as the Eagles took all three sets 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21.

Game Recap

Set 1: Reinhardt 25, Union Commonwealth 19
Union scored first in the opening set, but Reinhardt quickly took control with an 11-6 lead. The Bulldogs battled back to within two at 16-14 before the Eagles went on a 4-1 run to extend their lead to 20-15. Union cut the deficit to 21-18, but Reinhardt closed the set on a 4-1 run to take it 25-19 and go up 1-0.

Top Performers: Jersey Glass led the Bulldogs with four kills, while Rylee Stookey followed with three.

Set 2: Reinhardt 25, Union Commonwealth 19
Union opened the second set strong with a 4-0 run, but Reinhardt answered with a 5-0 stretch to take a 5-4 lead. The teams traded points until the score was tied 8-8. The Eagles then went on a 6-1 run to force a Union timeout. Out of the break, the Bulldogs responded with a 9-4 run to tie the score again at 18-18. However, Reinhardt closed the set on a 7-1 surge to win 25-19 and take a 2-0 advantage.

Top Performer: Ginevra Girardo led the team with five points—three coming from blocks and two from kills.

Set 3: Reinhardt 25, Union Commonwealth 21
Reinhardt jumped out early with a 4-2 lead in the final set, but Union tied it 4-4 as both teams traded points to a 13-13 deadlock. The Eagles then went on a 5-2 run to lead 18-15, prompting a Union timeout. Reinhardt extended its lead to 22-16 after the break. Union rallied to take five of the next nine points, but the Eagles held on to win 25-21 and complete the 3-0 sweep.

Top Performers: Girardo tallied three kills, Glass added two blocks and a kill, and Berkli Benefield contributed two kills and a block.

Sarah Charkosky reached her 500th career assist.

By the Numbers

  • Girardo and Glass led the team with seven kills apiece.

  • Sloan Coursey recorded a team-high 14 assists.

  • Sydney Worde led with 16 digs.

  • Girardo also led with three blocks and a team-best 9.5 points.
