UCU softball sweeps St. Andrews in doubleheader

Laurinburg, N.C. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team played at St. Andrews on Sunday in a doubleheader. The Bulldogs won both games, which included a run-rule win in the second matchup.

 

Game One:

UCU won 3-0 in seven innings. Seniors Megan Merritt and Megan McGinley each registered a game-leading two hits in the matchup. Merritt tallied a home run, while McGinley and Shaylin Lewis each recorded a double.

Merritt's homer scored the opening run of the game in the first inning. In the second inning, sophomore infielder Briley Robbins scored off an error. In the seventh inning, Lewis scored off an RBI double by McGinley.

Sophomore Carly Cain allowed no earned runs and just two hits in 7.0 innings pitched. Cain also recorded two strikeouts.

 

Game Two:

The Bulldogs won 9-1 in five innings. Merritt led UCU in hits with three. McGinley, Robbins, Ryleigh Petrey, and Kinsley Redmon each tallied two hits. Junior infielder Kaliana Pangallo also registered a hit.

Merritt, Lewis, and McGinley each tallied two runs scored. Petrey, Robbins, and Pangallo each registered one run. Merritt, McGinley, Petrey, and Robbins each recorded a double.

Merritt, McGinley, Petrey, and Redmon each tallied a game-leading two RBIs, while Kiara Wiley recorded one RBI.

Freshman Lily Marsh registered an impressive outing with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched, while allowing just one earned run and one hit. Marsh walked just three batters.

 

The Bulldogs are now 7-21 (5-13 AAC) this season, while St. Andrews is 3-29 (0-18 AAC). Up next for UCU is a home conference doubleheader against CIU on Friday, April 11, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
