Union splits doubleheader against Milligan

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team hosted Milligan on Thursday in a doubleheader. The Bulldogs fell short in the opening game, but won the second matchup 12-4 in five innings.

 

Game One:

Union led 4-2 after three innings of play, but Milligan won the game 8-4 in seven innings. Ryleigh Petrey led UCU in hits with two, while connecting on a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning.

Carly Cain, Jeweleyette Lilley, and Katie Fister each pitched in the matchup for UCU. Cain allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Lilley allowed two earned runs and one hit in 1.2 innings pitched. Fister allowed two earned runs in 1.0 innings pitched.

 

Game Two:

Union scored in each inning. The Bulldogs led 9-1 after three innings of play. At that point, the game entered a lightning delay. Following the delay, Milligan scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Bulldogs countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

UCU won the matchup 12-4 in five innings. Tori Turner led all players in hits with three. In addition to hitting a solo homer in the first game, Petrey hit a two-run home run in the second matchup.

Shaylin Lewis also registered a homer in the contest for Union. Lewis connected on a walk-off homer to give UCU the win. Fister pitched the entire game for Union.

 

The Bulldogs are now 3-11 (1-5 AAC) this season, while Milligan is 10-6 (6-4 AAC). Up next for UCU is a home conference doubleheader against Pikeville on Tuesday, March 18, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
