Union Drops The Show Opener to Shawnee State

KINGSPORT, Tenn. Union Commonwealth University's men's basketball team (2-6, 1-2 AAC) fell to Shawnee State (5-4) in its opening game of The Show on Saturday night at the MeadowView Convention Center, 89-56.

Senior forward Dallas Rufus led Union with 13 points, while redshirt junior forward Kaleb Hedgepeth added 12. Redshirt junior guard Drew Rhodes rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

How It Happened

First Half: Shawnee State 38, Union Commonwealth 21

Shawnee State opened the game on an 11-3 run before Union responded to cut the deficit to 11-10. From there, the Bears controlled the rest of the half, outscoring the Bulldogs 27-11 and taking a 38-21 lead into the break.

Second Half: Shawnee State 89, Union Commonwealth 56

Shawnee State continued its momentum after halftime, stretching the lead to 65-31 with 10 minutes remaining. Union was unable to slow the Bears' offense down the stretch as Shawnee State closed out the 89-56 win.
