Union Men’s Basketball Falls to Rival No. 20 Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. Union Commonwealth University's men's basketball team (1-1) fell to No. 20 Cumberlands (2-0) on Tuesday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center, 96-78.

Junior forward David Galentine led the Bulldogs with 15 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field while adding four rebounds, one block and one steal.

Three other Bulldogs scored in double figures. Senior guard Dallas Rufus and redshirt junior guard Kam O'Connor each finished with 14 points, while redshirt junior guard Kaleb Hedgepeth added 12. O'Connor and Rufus both went 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

First Half: Cumberlands 49, Union Commonwealth 27

Union started strong, jumping out to a 7-2 lead early in the first half. Cumberlands responded with six unanswered points to take an 8-7 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining. The Patriots controlled the rest of the half, building their advantage to 22 points heading into the break with a 49-27 lead.

Second Half: Cumberlands 96, Union Commonwealth 78

Union showed fight in the second half, cutting the deficit to 14 at 49-35. The Bulldogs outscored Cumberlands 51-47 in the period, but the Patriots' dominant first half proved too much to overcome as they secured the 96-78 victory.
