Bulldogs Drop Doubleheader Against Brenau

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team (11-31, 6-16 AAC) dropped its conference doubleheader to Brenau (24-12, 15-5 AAC) Friday evening at Union Field, falling 6-5 in Game One and 4-3 in Game Two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Brenau 6, Union Commonwealth 5

Brenau got on the board first in the opening inning, using a two-run triple to take a 2-0 lead. A groundout later in the inning brought in another run, extending the advantage to 3-0.

The Tigers added to their lead in the second inning with a two-run home run to make it 5-0.

Union would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a home run of their own after  Lily Allen hit a solo home run, making it 5-1.

In the third inning, the Bulldogs continued to chip away as Savanna Higgins doubled to drive in Kenley Vanbibber, and Skylar Smith followed with an RBI double to score Higgins and make it 5-3.

Union tied the game in the fourth inning when Vanbibber singled to bring in Hayden Keirsey, and Higgins hit an RBI double to score Vanbibber making it 5-5.

Brenau regained the lead in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly that proved to be the game-winning run, making it 6-5.

Union was unable to respond in the final two innings, falling in Game Two.

Notable Performances

Game 2: Brenau 4, Union Commonwealth 3

The Bulldogs struck first in the second inning when Taylor Kelly singled to right field, driving in Elizabeth Smith to take a 1-0 lead.

Union added to its lead in the fourth inning as Emma Gochenour launched a two-run home run, scoring Elizabeth Smith and extending the advantage to 3-0.

The Bulldogs held Brenau in check until the seventh inning, when the Tigers cut the deficit to 3-1 with a solo home run. Later in the inning, with runners on first and second, Brenau reached on a ball to the shallow outfield that resulted in a Union error, allowing all runners to score and giving the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

Union was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, falling in Game Two.
