BARBOURVILLE, Ky. The Union Commonwealth University softball team (5-9) split its doubleheader against the University of Northwestern Ohio (7-6) Wednesday evening at Union Field, winning 9-7 in game one and falling 4-1 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Union Commonwealth 9, Northwestern Ohio 7

Union set the tone early in the bottom of the second inning when Ryleigh Petrey singled to drive in Emma Gochenour for the game's first run.

Union continued to apply pressure later in the inning as Lily Allen reached on a Racers error, allowing two more runs to cross and extending the lead to 5-0.

After Northwestern Ohio cut into the deficit in the third, the Bulldogs responded immediately. Gochenour came home following another UNOH error to push the lead back to five at 6-1.

The Racers trimmed the margin to 6-3 in the fourth, but Union answered again in the bottom half when Kinsley Redmon grounded out to score Kenley Vanbibber, making it 7-3.

The Bulldogs created separation in the fifth inning as Petrey crushed a two-run home run to left field, extending Union's lead to 9-3.

Northwestern Ohio made things interesting with four runs in the seventh, but Union's early offensive surge proved to be enough as the Bulldogs secured the 9-7 victory.
