BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team (3-1) split its doubleheader against Georgetown College (1-1) Saturday night at Union Field, falling 5-3 in game one before bouncing back for a 4-1 win in game two.
Game 1: Georgetown 5, Union Commonwealth 3
Georgetown struck first in the top of the opening inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers added two more runs in the second on back-to-back hits to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Union threatened in both the second and third innings, loading the bases each time, but was unable to push a run across.
Georgetown added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the inning. Elizabeth Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Union's first run. Later in the frame, a passed ball allowed Savannah Higgins to score, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
In the sixth, Smith delivered again with a double to right-center field to bring Union within one at 4-3.
Georgetown secured insurance in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to left field, sealing the 5-3 victory.

In game two, the Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the first when Lily Allen doubled to center field, scoring Tori Turner from first for a 1-0 lead.
Union extended its advantage in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Maggie Haydu singled to right field to drive in two runs and make it 3-0.
In the sixth, the Bulldogs added another run following a Higgins single to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Georgetown avoided the shutout in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, but Union's defense held firm to secure the 4-1 win.
