Milligan (TN)
Milligan, Tenn. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team defeated Milligan in a doubleheader on Sunday. Following Sunday's series, the Bulldogs have won four games in a row with back-to-back sweeps of road conference series.
Game One:
Milligan led 2-0 entering the top of the fourth inning. Union's first run occurred when Taylor Whisonant scored off a ground out RBI by Kayla Keller. Milligan tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, a three-run homer by Megan Merritt tied the score at 4-4. The game went into extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, Kaley Harris scored when Leea Cole reached first off an error.
Following a double by Merritt that advanced Cole to third, Whisonant delivered a two-RBI single. Milligan scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Union would 7-6 in 10 innings.
Leea Cole pitched the entire game for the Bulldogs. Cole registered six strikeouts, while allowing 10 hits. Merritt and Whisonant tallied three hits, which were tied for the most by any player in the matchup. Cole and Lowe each recorded two hits.
Game Two:
Union took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The side began with a solo homer by Shelby Easton. Later in the side with one out, Harris scored off an RBI double by Ryleigh Petrey. Following the second out of the side, Merritt connected on a two-run homer.
The Bulldogs extended its lead in the fourth inning. Petrey registered a triple on the opening at bat of the side. Following two outs, Keller tallied an RBI double that scored Petrey. On the ensuing at bat, Keller scored off an RBI single by Lowe. Union would go on to win 7-1 in seven innings.
Cain pitched the entire game for the Bulldogs, and allowed six hits. Lowe, Easton, and Petrey each led Union in hits with two.
The Bulldogs are now 15-22 (13-13 AAC) this season, while Milligan is now 12-23 (10-16 AAC). Up next for Union is its final doubleheader of the regular season. The Bulldogs will host No. 22 Reinhardt in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
