The Bulldogs fall short in doubleheader at Campbellsville

Campbellsville, Ky. – The Union College softball team played in a doubleheader at Campbellsville on Wednesday. The Bulldogs fell 9-4 in the first game and 6-3 in the second matchup.

 

Game One:

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The first run came off an RBI double by Sarah Lowe that scored Kinsley Redmon. Later in the side, Lowe scored off an RBI single by Kayla Sullivan.

Going into the fifth inning, the Bulldogs trailed 5-2. Union would trim the deficit in the top of the fifth when Kayla Richardson scored off an RBI single by Lowe that advanced Megan Merritt to second base.

Later in the side, Merritt scored off a fielder's choice. The Bulldogs trailed by just one run going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but Campbellsville would extend its lead en route to a 9-4 win in seven innings.

Kerry Dixon and Carly Cain each pitched for Union. The Bulldogs registered seven hits as Lowe led the team with three. Of Union's four RBIs, Lowe and Sullivan each provided two.

 

Game Two:

Union took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Merritt scored off a fielder's choice. In the third inning, Union recorded home runs on back-to-back at bats to begin the side.

Lowe homered in the first at bat, while Whisonant hit a home run in the second at bat to give Union a 3-0 lead.

Campbellsville would respond by scoring two runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Bulldogs tallied a hit in each of the last two innings, but Campbellsville won 6-3 in seven innings.

Megan Merritt and Katie Fister each pitched for the Bulldogs. Union recorded 11 hits as Whisonant, Richardson, and Savannah Dehart each led the team with two. Lowe, Whisonant, and Ryleigh Petrey each recorded an RBI.

 

The Bulldogs are now 2-2, while Campbellsville is 6-1. Up next for Union is a doubleheader at Lindsey Wilson on Friday, Feb. 23, at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
