No. 7 Union falls short against No. 6 Columbia in AAC Tournament

Kingsport, Tenn. – The No. 7 seeded Union Commonwealth University softball team fell short against No. 6 Columbia in the AAC Tournament on Wednesday.

Union took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when an RBI single by Kerry Dixon scored Sarah Lowe. The Bulldogs would extend their lead in the top of the second. With two outs, Kayla Keller registered an RBI triple that scored Megan McGinley.

On the ensuing at bat, Sarah Lowe reached first off an RBI fielder's choice error, which scored Keller. Union led 3-0 after two innings.

Columbia scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fourth, a sacrifice fly RBI by Lowe scored Megan Merritt. On the next at bat, a sacrifice fly RBI by Taylor Whisonant scored Keller.

The Bulldogs led 5-2 after the top of the fourth inning, but Columbia took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the inning. Union trimmed the deficit in the top of the sixth with two outs when Kaley Harris registered an RBI single that scored Turner.

Columbia went on to win the game 8-6 in seven innings. Leea Cole delivered every pitch for Union, while allowing just three earned runs. Merritt, Whisonant, and McGinley each recorded a game-leading two hits. The Bulldogs are now 15-26 this season, while Columbia is 25-21.
