The Bulldogs sweep Bryan in doubleheader
Dayton, Tenn. – The Union College softball team won both games of Thursday's doubleheader at Bryan. It marked the first doubleheader sweep for Union since the Bulldogs swept Georgetown to open the season.
Game One:
The bases were loaded with one out in the top of the first inning when Leea Cole scored off an RBI single by Katie Fister. On the next at bat, an RBI ground out by Kinsley Redmon scored Sarah Lowe. Following the top of the first, Union led 2-0.
Bryan scored one run in the third inning, but Union would extend its lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Cole tallied an RBI single that scored Redmon. On the next at bat, Megan Merritt registered an RBI as Kaley Harris scored via an error by Bryan.
On the ensuing at bat, Megan McGinley scored as Lowe was walked with the bases loaded. Union led 5-1 after the top of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs won 5-2 in seven innings.
Leea Cole pitched the entire game for Union. Cole tallied four strikeouts, while allowing seven hits and walking one batter. Cole also led Union in hits with two of the Bulldogs' seven.
Game Two:
Cole singled on the first at bat of the game. On the next at bat, Megan Merritt recorded a single. The ensuing at bat featured a two-RBI double by Lowe that scored Cole and Merritt. On the next at bat, Lowe scored off an RBI ground out by Redmon.
Union led 3-0 after the top of the first inning. Bryan would score one run in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs tallied seven hits in the matchup, while Bryan recorded nine. Despite that, no runs were scored after the first inning as Union won 3-1 in seven innings.
Bryan had two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bulldogs did not allow any runs to be scored in the side.
Carly Cain was the winning pitcher. Cain allowed six hits and no earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Kerry Dixon also pitched in the matchup for Union. Merritt and Lowe each led Union in hits with two.
The Bulldogs are now 5-7 (3-3 AAC) this season, while Bryan is 7-6 (3-3 AAC). Up next for Union is a home conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 16, against Truett McConnell beginning at 1:00 p.m.
