2024 Union men’s cross country season preview
Barbourville, Ky. - The Union Commonwealth University men's cross country team begins its 2024 season on Saturday in the Mike and Mary Kay Johnson Classic.
To preview the upcoming season, here is a Q&A session with head coach Chris Jelks.
1. What are your expectations for this season?
My expectations are to improve on where we left off in 2023. We have new faces that are excited to make their mark on this team.
2. What goals have you set for your team?
My goals are to have at least five guys under 29 minutes in the 8K. With the workouts we have been doing, I think that will be accomplished. As a team, I believe we can go top seven or six at conference.
3. Are there specific skills or areas of the game you focused on improving during the pre-season?
As a team, we are doing more team bonding. With so many new faces, we are making the newcomers feel welcomed and let them know how important they are to the team.
4. What strengths do you see in your team this year?
Our strengths are our youth. With no seniors and one junior, we will be even stronger next year and the year after.
5. Which returning players are you most excited about?
My returners are a one, two, three punch. Alex Garcia, Jackson Crume, and Conner Partin have been patiently waiting to get back to XC.
6. Are there any newcomers or transfers who you believe could make a significant impact this season?
My newcomers are eager to get a feel for college running. Tyler Payne, Zabrey Bortz, and Noah Hale will make an immediate impact. Also look for Chandler Mills, Tim Freeman, and Torrean Thorton to add to our depth.
