No. 22 Bluefield 'Rams' past Union, 91-78

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College Bulldogs dropped a 91-78 home Appalachian Athletic Conference contest Saturday against No. 22 Bluefield (Va.) College.

Union fell to 16-10 overall and 6-8 in league play. The loss also snapped the Bulldogs' four-game home winning streak. Bluefield moved to 20-5 overall and 12-2 in the conference.

Bluefield ended the first half on a 6-0 run to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room. The momentum swing was enough to give the Rams the advantage the rest of the contest. Bluefield opened the second half with a 7-0 run over the first three minutes and the Rams never looked back.

The closet Union could cut into the lead was five points, 51-46, with 10 minutes to go. Bluefield regained control and eventually built a 15-point lead.

Aaron Dunaway (Lexington, Ky.) poured in a game-high 24 points for Union. It marked the sixth time this season he has passed the 20-point plateau.

Chris Stunson (Richmond, Ky.) and Kearney Demus (Lexington, Ky.) added 13 points apiece. Stunson also dished out a season-high six assists and it marked the 12th time he has led the Bulldogs in assists this season. Michael Hester (Independence, Ky.) also scored in double-digits with 11. Hubertus von Heyden (Neulengbach, Austria) grabbed a game-best seven rebounds.

Dontae Gholson led the Rams with a 19-point scoring effort. James Chapman and Johnny Witherspoon scored 17 and 13 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs made 51.9 percent (27-of-52) of their shots from the field and Bluefield was right there with a 49.1 percent (27-of-55). The Bulldogs held the advantage in the rebound category with a 32-25 margin.

The Bulldogs will travel to play Virginia Intermont College in a conference contest Wednesday. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

  • With his 13 points, Stunson scored his 1,100 point of his career, 24th on Union's all-time scoring list.
