BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University baseball team (6-31, 3-21 AAC) dropped game one of an Appalachian Athletic Conference series to Spartanburg Methodist (20-21, 12-10 AAC), 9-5, on Tuesday.

Spartanburg Methodist took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Union responded in the bottom of the second as Caleb Newkirk delivered an RBI single to score Cristian Bajjalieha and tie the game at 1-1. Roberto Gallardo followed with an RBI single to plate Marquese Glynn, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage.

The Pioneers regained control in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Union began to chip away in the fifth inning when Noah Young recorded an RBI single to score Aiden Wilson and cut the deficit to 4-3.

Spartanburg Methodist added five runs across the sixth and eighth innings to extend its lead to 9-3.

The Bulldogs mounted a late push in the bottom of the eighth. Bajjalieha drove in Isaiah Pintor with an RBI single, and Gallardo followed with another RBI single to score Bajjalieha. However, Union Commonwealth was unable to complete the comeback, falling 9-5.
