Bulldogs fall in AAC series at Montreat

MONTREAT, N.C. – The Union Commonwealth University baseball team (6-28, 3-20 AAC) dropped the final two games of its Appalachian Athletic Conference series at Montreat (28-15, 12-9 AAC), falling 17-7 and 11-2 to complete the three-game sweep.

Game One: Montreat 17, Union Commonwealth 7

  • Montreat opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

  • Union Commonwealth responded in the top of the fourth, as Aiden Wilson delivered a two-run home run to score Nathan McCabe and give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Roberto Gallardo later added to the advantage, scoring on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.

  • Montreat answered with six runs across the fourth and sixth innings to take a 7-3 lead.

  • The Bulldogs rallied in the top of the seventh. Noah Young launched a three-run home run to score Wilson and Cristian Bajjalieha, tying the game. Caleb Newkirk followed with an RBI double to score Isaiah Pintor and even the score at 7-7.

  • Montreat broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth, plating 10 runs to secure the run-rule victory.

Game Two: Montreat 11, Union Commonwealth 2

  • Montreat scored early and often, plating 11 runs over the first five innings to take control.

  • Union Commonwealth got on the board in the sixth inning. Cameron Mays scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Hollon, and Caleb Newkirk added an RBI single to score Wilson.
