Bulldogs Fall in Saturday AAC Twinbill

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University baseball team (4-17, 1-13 AAC) dropped both games of an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader to Columbia International University(10-18, 8-6 AAC) on Saturday, falling 14-10 and 6-4 at Jerry Carey Stadium.

Game One: CIU 14, Union Commonwealth 10

  • Union Commonwealth struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Caleb Newkirk delivered an RBI single to score Isaiah Pintor for an early 1-0 lead.
  • Bryson Vernon added to the Bulldogs' advantage in the bottom of the third with an RBI double that scored Newkirk to make it 2-0.
  • Columbia International responded in the middle innings, scoring eight runs across the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-2 lead.
  • Noah Young cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, bringing the score to 8-3.
  • The Rams extended their lead in the top of the ninth, plating six runs to push the margin to 14-3.
  • Union Commonwealth mounted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth. Nathan McCabe opened the scoring with a two-run home run that brought Pintor home. Young later scored on a passed ball to add another run.
  • Vernon followed with an RBI single to score Newkirk, and Cristian Bajjalieha added an RBI double that plated Nate Adkins. Aiden Wilson continued the rally with a two-run double, scoring Vernon and Adkins.
  • Despite the seven-run ninth inning, the Bulldogs fell short as CIU held on for the 14-10 victory.

Game Two: CIU 6, Union Commonwealth 4

  • The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when Columbia International scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Union Commonwealth responded in the bottom of the third. Roberto Gallardo drove in Bryson Vernon to put the Bulldogs on the board, and Aiden Wilson followed with an RBI single that scored Bajjalieha to trim the deficit to 3-2.
  • The Bulldogs took their first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bajjalieha delivered a two-RBI double, scoring Nate Adkins and Colten Daugherty to make it 4-3.
  • Columbia International answered in the top of the seventh inning with three runs to regain the lead at 6-4. Union Commonwealth was unable to respond in the final inning as CIU completed the sweep.
