Union Battles, Falls to Midway in Midweek Matchup

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University baseball team (3-12, 0-9 Appalachian Athletic Conference) dropped a midweek contest to Midway (12-5) on Tuesday at Jerry Carey Stadium.

Game One: Union Commonwealth 6, Midway 8

  • Midway jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on an RBI single, two hit batters and a walk.
  • Union responded in the bottom of the second when Brysen Vernon delivered an RBI triple to score Nate Adkins. Vernon later crossed the plate on a Midway error to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • Midway extended its lead to 5-2 in the third on an RBI single, but the Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the inning. Max Charlton drove in Noah Young with an RBI single before Vernon added a two-RBI single to score Charlton and Adkins, tying the game at 5-5.
  • The Eagles regained the lead in the seventh inning, taking advantage of a Union error to go ahead 6-5. The Bulldogs evened the score in the bottom of the frame when Joaquin Gutierrez scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
  • Midway pulled away in the eighth with an RBI single and an RBI double to secure the 8-6 victory. Union threatened late but was unable to complete the comeback.
