No. 11 Cumberlands knocks off Union baseball
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Despite making strides from two previous meetings this season, the Union offense couldn't put together enough hits in a 3-1 loss to 11th-ranked Cumberlands in a non-conference baseball matchup Tuesday.
Playing against the fourth-highest scoring offense in the country, six Bulldog pitchers scattered seven hits and kept the Patriots off the scoreboard in seven of their eight at-bats, only slipping up in the fourth when Cumberlands scored three times.
Union, which had just five hits, cut into the deficit in the seventh on an RBI single by David Mitchell. The Bulldogs then brought the tying run to the plate after Hazel Martinez led off the ninth with a walk, but that was as close as they would get as the next three batters were retired.
Luke Pell had two hits for Union, which lost 18-3 and 11-1 in its first two games against the Patriots this season.
Now 18-12-1 overall, the Bulldogs return to Appalachian Athletic Conference play this week in a rescheduled three-game series at Reinhardt. Originally slated for Friday and Saturday, the teams will now play at doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Thursday and a single game at noon Friday.
