BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union College women's swimming & diving head coach Rafael Forti announced Laura Ayres signed her national letter of intent and will join the team for the 2017-18 season.

A native of Araraquara, Brazil, Ayres comes the Bulldog program as a transfer from Universidade Santa Cecilia, Brazil, along with being a member of the Unisanta swim club. Ayres has been swimming for 12 years.

"Laura is a very experienced swimmer," Forti stated. "She comes in from one of the best clubs in Brazil, and has had the chance to compete at the highest national level there already. She will bring much needed depth to our women's distance freestyle events as well as butterfly events. I am sure she will provide a positive impact right away and will help lead our large young roster. I am looking forward to start coaching her in a few months".

Ayres was recognized during her career being named as a Brazilian National Championship finalist, along with multiple medalist in state competitions

The distance races will be Ayres' main events for the Bulldogs including the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and the 800 freestyle.

"My expectations are the best possible," said Ayres about joining the Bulldogs. "I am eager to be a part of the Bulldog family".

The daughter of Flávia Maria Gonçalves Ayres and Paulo Roberto Ayres, she intends to study business management.
