BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team grabbed an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) split against Milligan (Tenn.) on Friday, winning the first game 4-3 before falling 7-3 in the second game of the doubleheader action.

With the split, The Bulldogs are now 26-22 overall and 13-13 in AAC play. Union holds onto to a two-game lead over Milligan in conference play, as the Buffaloes are 23-26 overall on the season and 11-15 in AAC.

Game One

The Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the first after a double from the bat of Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.) to put him in scoring position. Ronnie Healy (SR/Jupiter, Fla.) got the RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead. Daniel Neal (SO/London, Ky.) followed with an RBI double to score Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) to make it a 2-0 lead.

After a quiet offensive outings from both teams, Milligan woke up their bats in the fourth inning, putting the pressure on the Bulldogs as they took the lead in the fifth making it 3-2.

It would be Union with the last say after Healy hits an RBI single to take back the lead, closing out the game with a 4-3 victory.

Overall, Healy and Neal ended the game 2-for-3 from the plate, with two doubles a piece and an RBI from Neal, and three from Healy.

On the mound, Logan Groce (SO/Huntland, Tenn.) recorded the win. Talon Kunkel (SR/Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) got the save for the Bulldogs after striking out one in the final inning.

Game Two

Union scored first taking another 2-0 lead in the first, after Francisco Ogando sparked the Bulldogs with his ninth homerun of the season to score pinch runner Evan Figert (FR/Franklin, Ky.) to take the 2-0 lead.

Milligan tied it up in the third scoring two runs of their own. However, Union would get their last run of the game off an error to score Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.).

Milligan turned on its offense in collecting 11 of their 13 hits in the last innings, scoring seven runs to give them the 7-3 victory.

Overall, Healy stayed hot from the first game and ended 2-for-3 from the plate, while Ogando plated a home run on a 1-for-3 performance with two RBIs.

Union and Milligan will conclude the AAC series with a nine-inning contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
