BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team dropped a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) games to visiting Reinhardt (Ga.) on Thursday afternoon, falling 9-0 in game one before losing 7-2 in the second game.

With the results, Union moves to 24-20 overall and 11-12 in AAC play, while the Eagles are 34-17 on the season and 14-9 in conference play.

Game One

Reinhardt got to an early lead scoring eight runs in the first inning off five hits, taking an 8-0 lead.

Then in the third, the Eagles struck again and added one more run on two hits to give them an insurance run, making it a 9-0 game.

The Bulldogs couldn't get the offensive rhythm going for a late-inning rally and fell 9-0.

Game Two

Unlike the first game, both offenses got on the board early. Reinhardt scored two runs in the top of the second to give the Eagles the early 2-0 advantage.

However, in the bottom on the third, Union plated its first run of the day. First, Chris Lane (JR/Battle Ground, Wash.) started things off with a leadoff single. Michael Castillo (SR/New York, N.Y.) reached on a bunt in the next at bat, and Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.) followed with a RBI single to score Lane.

Despite the rally early, that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get, as Reinhardt went on to score three more runs in the fourth inning and another two runs in the fifth to take the 7-2  win in game two and sweep on the day victory.

The second run for the Bulldogs came from a home run from J.C. Pena (SR/Perth Amboy, N.J.), his second of the year.

Overall, Union recorded eight hits as Pena and Castillo collected four of them going 2-for-3, while Gaines, Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.), and Lane each all chipped in a hit along with Neal who hit a triple in the sixth.

Up Next

Union and Reinhardt will return to the field tomorrow to wrap up the three game weekend series for a one nine-inning contest out at Jerry Carey Stadium. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
