MONTREAT, N.C. – The Union College baseball team fell in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader against Montreat (N.C.) on Friday 8-7 and 10-7, before winning the final game 12-8 of the series.

At the end of series, the Bulldogs are now 24-18 overall and 11-10 in AAC play, while the Cavaliers are 15-25 overall on the season and 4-17 in AAC.

Game One

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the top of the first scoring three runs, before adding one in the second and two in the third inning. Union led 6-5 majority of the game until the sixth when the Cavilers hit a two run homerun to jump to a 7-6 lead. J.C. Pena (SR/Perth Amboy, N.J.) hit a double in the seventh and later scores to tie the game 7-7. However, it was Montreat to get the first win of the series, scoring the game-winning run with bases loaded off an RBI single.  

Overall, four Bulldogs ended the game 2-for-4 from the plate, with one run a piece, including Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.), Ronnie Healy (SR/Jupiter, Fla.), Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.) and Pena. Daniel Neal (SO/London, Ky.) also had a strong outing at the plate going 1-for-3 with two RBIs

Game Two

Union collected only eight hits in the second game; however, the Bulldogs started off ahead by scoring six runs in the first two innings. Three of those runs came from a three-run home run from Valentin as the Bulldogs took an early 6-2 lead. Union got into some trouble in the fourth allowing seven runs giving the Cavilers a 10-6 lead. The Bulldogs battled back to score another run to close the gap to 10-7, but the damage was already done allowing Montreat to sweep the doubleheader.

Overall, Valentin stayed hot from the first game and ended 2-for-3 from the plate and one homerun, while Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) and Neal each plated a run on a 2-for-4 performance from the dish.

Game Three

The game started off with a two-run home run from Ogando, giving Union the early 2-0 lead. Montreat answered back with a two-run homerun of its own to tie the game 2-2. Union added one run in the third, taking the lead, but the Cavilers added two runs to Union's one taking a 4-3 lead.

The game tied up at five apiece in the sixth with another home run from Healy. Union took the lead in the seventh scoring off an error, making it 6-5. The Bulldogs tallied a six-run stretch in the eighth as Healy hit his 12th homerun of the season scoring three runs to close out the game for the Bulldogs for the 12-8 victory.

Healy went 2-for-5 from the plate with four RBIs and two home runs. Gaines, Neal, and Pena all went 2-for-4. Valentine and Pudge Morgan (FR/Glasgow, Ky.) helped out with two RBIs apiece.

Casey Whittle (SR/Danville, Ky.) got the win pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs off six hits and striking out two.
