DAYTON, Tenn. – The Union College baseball team picked up a key Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader split Saturday against No. 20 Bryan (Tenn.), winning 7-4 in the opener before falling 9-6 in the finale.

With the split, Union moves to 23-16 overall and 10-8 in conference play, while Bryan is now 27-13 overall and 11-7 in the AAC.

Game One

John Hisel (SO/Lexington, Ky.) improved to 6-3 on the year as the right-hander kept the Lions lineup off balance all day, giving up four runs off of four hits and striking out four batters. Talon Kunkel (SR/Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) got the save for the Bulldogs pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one run and striking out one.

Bryan struck first in the second, scoring one run. Union got things started on its end after leadoff batter Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.) lined a double to start the third. Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.) traded places with Gaines to tie the game at 1-all. Valentin later scored on a wild pitch, putting Union up 2-1.

The Lions answered back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run for a lead 3-2. In the fourth inning, Valentin and Ronnie Healy (SR/Jupiter, Fla.) both got RBI singles to push the Bulldogs back ahead 4-3 scoring Zane Britton (SO/Greeneville, Tenn.) and Chris Lane (JR/Battle Ground, Wash.).

Bryan rallied to tie things up in the bottom of the fourth after a Tyler Scott sacrifice fly. The top of the sixth would be the inning Union took the game home with an RBI single from Valentin and a two-run single from Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) to give the Bulldogs the 7-4 victory.

Overall, Valentin went 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base, as Ogando also notched two RBIs with a 1-for-4 performance. Gaines went 2-for-3 and two runs scored.

Game Two

In the final game of the series, Union jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first as Ogando lined a two-run double and Britton belted his second home run of the year to score three runs.

The Bulldogs final run came from an error in the second, but it would not be enough as Bryan battled back to take the win 9-6 scoring three in the third and fourth before adding an additional two more runs in the sixth.

Healy went 2-for-4 and one RBI, while Britton finished 1-for-2 from the plate recording a home run and three RBIs. Ogando notched two more RBIs in the second game while going 1-for-3 with one run scored.
