BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College baseball team pulled away early in game one and battled in game two against St. Andrews (N.C.) on Saturday as the Bulldogs swept an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Knights by scores of 11-3 and 3-1.

Union is now 21-12 overall and 9-5 in league play, while St. Andrews is 16-23 overall and 3-11 in the AAC.

Game One

Starting pitcher Jon Hisel allowed four hits and two walks while striking-out three to improve to 5-3 on the season with the 11-3 win.

The game started off with both teams hitting solo homeruns in the first inning to get things rolling. It was during the second inning that Union took off and never looked back, erupting with seven runs.

The Knights answered back with one run in the third, but Union matched that one run in the bottom of the inning. The fourth inning remained quiet for both teams with the score 9-2 going into the fifth. The Bulldogs tacked on two more in the fifth for good measure to win the game 11-3.

Chris Lane (JR/Battle Ground, Wash.) was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 and collecting three RBIs, and two runs in the win. Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.) and Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.) both went 2-for-4 in the first game. Gaines added one run and two RBIs, while Valentine added two runs, and a solo home run.

Game Two

The second game started off early for the Bulldogs as they scored a run in each of the first two innings. Daniel Neal (SO/London, Ky.) hit an RBI single to score one, while Lane scored on an error for the other.

The Knights scored a run in the top of the fourth, but a double from Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) knocked in Valentin gave Union the 3-1 lead. The following innings remained scoreless as Union collected the two-run victory.

Ogando led Union at the plate in going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Austin Dingee (JR/Bay City, Mich.) got the win allowing one run off of four hits, while striking out two. Talon Kunkel (SR/Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) got the save for the Bulldogs striking out three of his own.
