FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Union College men's basketball team spent the day in the state's capitol as the Bulldogs were honored on the floor of the Kentucky State Senate on Wednesday.

Union won the 2017 NAIA Division II National Championship with a 72-69 victory over Cornerstone (Mich.) on March 14 in Point Lookout, Mo., and the state senate took a moment to recognize the Bulldogs' achievement.

"Having our national championship team being recognized on the senate floor of our state's capitol was an unprecedented moment in the history of Union College," said head coach Kevin Burton. "This was such an incredibly special experience for all of our players. I thank all of our players for representing the Union College community with such humility and class."

A proclamation was read honoring the Bulldogs for the 35-3 overall record and for ending the season on a 33-game winning streak en route to capturing the school's first-ever NAIA national championship.

Senator Robert Stivers II, who represents District 25 of which Union is located in, spoke a few words regarding the magnitude of the team winning the national championship as well as impact Union has had on the region.

Joining Burton and the team were President Marcia Hawkins; Ernie Trosper – the first NAIA All-American in Union history; and members of the Union Board of Trustees – Paul Isaacs, Stephen Rhodes, and Donald Jones.
