BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team captured their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader sweep of the season as they played host to Bluefield (Va.) Saturday, winning the first game 9-4, before taking the second game 8-4.

With the victories, Union moves to 14-10 overall and 4-4 in the AAC, while Bluefield falls to 13-10 overall and are 2-6 in conference play.

Chris Lane (JR/Battle Ground, Wash.) had a perfect day, going 6-for-6 in the first game.

Game One

The Bulldogs offense dominated in the first game, collecting 14 hits and scoring nine runs with no errors.

Bluefield had a hard time finding its rhythm offensively but was able to put four runs across on six hits.

In the third, Lane lined a double down deep right field line putting him in scoring position with one out. Michael Castillo (SR/New York, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double to score Lane. Later in the frame, Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) added a two-run single to give Union the 3-0 lead in the top of the third.

The Rams scored one of their own in the bottom of the fourth, before Union increased their 3-0 lead to 7-1. Daniel Neal (SO/London, Ky.), Zane Britton (SO/Greeneville, Tenn.), Lane and Michael Castillo each drove in a run during the rally.

The bottom of the fifth Union allowed two more runs, followed with one in the sixth allowing the Bluefield to close the gap 7-4. However, it would not be enough. The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the seventh, before closing out the game 9-4.

Along with Lane, Michael Castillo had a perfect game going 2-for-2 with one RBI. Francisco Ogando finished the game going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Game Two

Union came out with vengeance in the second game, jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead off of three hits in the top of the first. That would be all the Bulldogs needed to secure the 8-4 win. Bluefield would answer with one run in the bottom of the second inning followed by two in the third, and one in the fifth.

Jon Hisel picked up the win, pitching a complete game, allowing four runs off seven hits, while striking out nine.

Offensively, Lane went 2-for-2 from the plate with one RBI, while Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.), went 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
