BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team spilt its Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader to Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, winning 8-7 in extra innings before falling 6-3.

The spilt brings Union to 11-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while the 10th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan is now 15-8 overall and 5-1 in the AAC.

Game One

Tennessee Wesleyan nearly pulled out a victory, but Union had the last laugh as it registered the 8-7, extra-inning win.

Union came out dominating the first four innings, giving Union the early 6-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth was Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.). As he scored in the second inning off Zane Britton (SO/Greeneville, Tenn.)'s single to right-center field, giving Union the early lead.

The third inning would be more successful for Union as Ronnie Healy (SR/Jupiter, Fla.) hits a two run homerun, followed by another run scored by Robbie DelaMontaigne (SO/Coronado, Calif.) on an error from the third baseman. Union continued to increase their lead, as Healy hits a double to score Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.) to make it 6-0.

The damaged had already been done, but not as far as Tennessee Wesleyan was concerned. The Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan jumped ahead to 7-6 in the top of seventh. After bases were loaded and Grant Lang hits a triple scoring three to give them the lead. Union was not settling for the lost as DelaMontaigne was hit by a pitch putting him on base. Tyler Graham (FR/Hopkinsville, Ky.) came in to pinch-run and later scored tying the game 7-7, sending the game into extra innings.

Tied at 7-7, Tennessee Wesleyan went three up and three down. Michael Castillo (SR/New York, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the eighth by getting hit by pitch. Gaines laid down a sac bunt to move Castillo over to second, followed by a wild pitch moving Castillo to third . Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.) stepped up and delivered a double to drive in Castillo for the game-winning run.

Healy and Gaines led Union at the plate both going 2-for-4. Healy added one run scored, three RBIs, and a home run, while Gaines scored twice. Ogando went 2-for-3 with two runs scored along with Britton going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Wonder Castillo (JR/Perth Amboy, N.J.) pitching 1 2/3 innings in picking up the win, allowing just one hit and run while striking out two.

Game Two

The final game of the series did not end how Union would have liked, but it rallied late but Tennessee Wesleyan claimed the 6-3 decision.

The game was scoreless until the third when Tennessee Wesleyan put four runs across followed by one in the fifth, and another in the seventh. However, Union did not give up, collecting three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Britton came up to bat with two outs and two on, and on the second pitch, he launched a three-run home run closing in Tennessee Wesleyan 6-3. However, the damage had already been done and Tennessee Wesleyan took the win over Union
