BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team fell 12-4 in the first game of the weekend series against No. 10-ranked and Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) foe Tennessee Wesleyan.

With the loss, Union is now 10-9 overall while 1-3 in the AAC. Tennessee Wesleyan moves to 15-7 overall and 4-0 in the AAC on the season.

Tennessee Wesleyan leaped out to the early 3-0 lead in the first. After back-to-back singles, Dan Ward belted a three-run home run for the early advantage.

It remained a three-run game until the sixth when Tennessee Wesleyan plated four more runs. Union added three runs of its own as Ronnie Healy (SR/Jupiter, Fla.) hit a three-run homerun over right field fence.

In the seventh, Healy would hit a single down shallow left field for an RBI, closing the gap 7-4 going into the eighth inning.

Shortly after, Tennessee Wesleyan drove in five more runs to close out the game 12-4, scoring one run in the eight and four in the ninth inning.

Overall, Healy and Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) both had a strong day at the plate, as each ended the day 2-for-4. Healy drove in four runs and along with a homerun. Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.) also had a big day going 4-for-4 and one run scored.

Meanwhile, Malik Stephens and Ward had a productive day for Tennessee Wesleyan with two homeruns and four RBIs apiece. Stephens had a 4-for-5 performance from the plate and Ward went 2-for-5.

Union continues action with Tennessee Wesleyan tomorrow with a double header to complete the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Jerry Carey Stadium.
