BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College football team wrapped up its spring practice recently with its annual intra-squad game, and head coach Andre Linn was pleased with what he saw.

"It was a very competitive scrimmage," Linn said. "When you look at inter-squad scrimmages, you don't want to see one side of the ball dominate the other. You want to see a competitive scrimmage, and that is what we had out there."

Offensively, the Bulldogs received balanced play from the three quarterbacks. Alex Bell (JR/Daytona Beach, Fla.) completed 3-of-8 passes for 24 yards and ran for 53 yards on seven attempts, while Kendrick Furness (SO/North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) was 6-of-14 passing for 41 yards with 67 yards rushing on five carries. Victor Garth (FR/Decatur, Ala.) rounded things out as he threw for 110 yards on 5-of-9 passing and run for 23 yards on four carries.

In the backfield, Timius Lowe (FR/Decatur, Ala.) rushed for 72 yards and a score on four carries to go along with two catches for 7 yards, and Collin England (FR/Union, Ky.) netted 41 yards and a touchdown on four attempts. Ramses Hernandez (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.) ran for 24 yards and a touchdown and caught one pass for 29 yards, while Izayah Riettie (FR/Lakeland, Fla.) rushed for 14 yards on three attempts.

Bradley Elkins (SO/Pikeville, Ky.) led the Bulldogs with four receptions for 30 yards, while Tristan Coffey (FR/Danville, Ky.) amassed 43 receiving yards on two catches.

Lowe and Coffey provided the big offensive highlights on the day with Lowe ripping off a 52-yard rushing touchdown and Coffey hauling in a 35-yard touchdown pass.

Union had several players to shine defensively. Tyson Patrick (FR/Mobile, Ala.) led the way with six tackles, while Justavious Robinson (FR/Alexander City, Ala.) had five to go along with a sack. Jake Averhart (JR/Corner, Ala.) and Tyler Wright (SO/Greer, S.C.) each recorded four tackles. Alex Anderson (FR/Rock Hill, S.C.) and Blake Dunn (SO/Bowling Green, Ky.) collected one sack apiece, while Chance Ansardi (SO/Mount Vernon, Ky.) made three stops and broke up a pass.

Seth Nichols (SO/Simpsonville, S.C.) provided the defensive highlight of the day. With an apparent score looming, Nichols stripped the ball away, and the ball bounced out of the end zone for a touchback. Nichols also added three tackles to his day.

"We saw good plays by defense when their backs are to the wall," said Linn. "And when a big play opportunity presented itself on offense, we executed it.

"We need to improve our tackling on defense, and on offense, we need better consistency," the Bulldog coach added. "Overall, I am proud of our team. They know how to compete, and they play hard and fast."

Union finished the 2016 season 5-6 overall and went 4-2 in Mid-South Conference East play. The Bulldogs had 10 players to make the All-MSC East Team with Riettie and Robinson being named the Offensive and Defensive Freshmen of the Year.
