COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Union College men's and women's swimming teams opened competition at the 2017 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships at the Columbus Aquatic Center on Wednesday morning.

The Bulldogs got the finals started with the women's 800-Freestyle relay, and the team of Lara Kaufmann (SR/Schwerte, Germany), Anna Misiewicz (JR/Nassau, Bahamas), Eliska Melicharova (SR/Upice, Czech Republic), and Kellianne Holck (SR/Island Lake, Ill. ) finished 11th overall with a time of 8:07.17, earning 11 points.

In the men's portion of the 800-Freestyle Relay, Ivar de Jong (SO/Almere, The Netherlands), Grant Davies (FR/RCT, Wales), Bailey Harris (SO/Sunshine Coast, Australia), and Lucas Lucena (SR/Joinville, Brazil) competed in the finals, placing 14th with a time of 7:14.13 to earn six points.

"These two relays this morning were very competitive," said head coach Rafael Forti. "I am glad that both our relays were able to swim their season best at the main stage at nationals. The women improved 20.40, and the men improved 1.91. It was a good start of the meet. We are looking forward to the next six sessions of the meet over the next three days."
