BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team's explosive offense and electrifying pitching guided the Bulldogs to capture the four-game series win over Cincinnati-Clermont with sweeping the doubleheader action on Sunday.

Union grabbed the sweep on the day in dominating fashion, winning 4-2 and 14-2.

With the wins, the Bulldogs improve to 9-6 overall.

Game One

Cincinnati-Clermont set the tone early in game one, but the Bulldogs battled in the third inning with a triple by Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.), scoring J.C. Pena (SR/Perth Amboy, N.J.) to tie up the score. Gaines also scored after a single by Bruce Valentin (SR/Bronx, N.Y.) to take the 2-1 lead.

In the next inning, Union plated another run off a double by Chris Lane (JR/Battle Ground, Wash.), followed by a single from Pena to score the runner. Another runner scored with bases loaded, on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Neal (SO/London, Ky.).

The Cougars would score one run in the top of the seventh inning, but Union took the game 4-2.

On the mound, John Hisel (SO/Lexington, Ky.) captured his first win of the season, recording an impressive eight strikeouts facing 25 batters. His 6 2/3 innings of work earned his first win of the season and help lift Union past Cincinnati-Clermont.

Overall, Bruce Valentin and Pena both ended the game going 1-for-2 from the plate, with one RBI and one run each, while Gaines went 1-for-3 with one run and RBI.

Game Two

In the second game, Union was slow to push runs across as Cincinnati-Clermont's Nick King hit his first homerun of the season. The Cougars added another run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Healy scored the first run of the game for the Bulldogs, coming home on a fielder's choice.

Union College put the game away in the bottom of the fifth, after plating seven runs on five hits to jump out to a commanding 8-2 advantage. During the seventh inning, Union added six more runs on six hits with a Healy double starting it off and a Curry Brown (JR/Harrodsburg, Ky.) RBI double ending the inning, bringing the score to 14-2.

The 14-run spot for the Bulldogs gave them the momentum to get three outs in the top of the seventh to go on and secure the 14-2 series sweep over Cincinnati-Clermont.

Union posted 12 hits in the second game with Healy pacing the Bulldogs having a 3-for-4 performance from the plate, with three runs. Pudge Morgan (FR/Glasgow, Ky.) went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
