BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College women's basketball team came up short against Bluefield (Va.), dropping 72-68 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest Saturday.

With the loss, Union falls to 16-11 overall and 10-10 in AAC play. The Rams improve to 15-12 overall and 11-9 in the AAC.

The teams struggled for consistency in the first half. Bluefield was able to push ahead to take an 18-14 lead after the first, but Union scrapped back to tie things up at 29-all at the half.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs kept fighting, tying it up once more after a 3-point basket and a bucket by Dannika Prater (SO/Clarksville, Tenn.) to make it 39-all with 6:06 left in the period.  However, the Rams went on a 16-2 run in opening up a 55-41 cushion. Reagan King (SR/Hindman, Ky.) drained a 3-pointer at the end of the period to make it 55-44 going into the fourth.

The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth, cutting the margin to two on three occasions. With 37 seconds left, Brianna Adler (FR/Burlington, Ky.) hit a pair of free throws to make it 68-66. However, Bluefield went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the waning moments to seal the 72-68 win.

Despite the valiant effort, Union couldn't find the answer down the stretch against the Rams.  A huge difference came on the glass as Bluefield was able to outrebound Union 37-25. The field-goal percentage would be neck and neck as Bluefield barely beat the Bulldogs field goal percentage by 45.3 percent to Union's 45.1 percent.

Prater paced Union with 14 points going 5-for-7 from the field, and King ended the night with 12 points netting an impressive 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Aaliyah Lumson (JR/Mayfield, Ky.) also had a strong displaying finishing with 11 points, along with Adler with eight points, while both Kasey Young (JR/Danville, Ky.) and Nannilena White (JR/Frankfort, Ky.) grabbed down seven boards a piece.

Bluefield had three players finish with double-digits with Danae Cox leading the way with 25 points.
