BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team captured their first doubleheader sweep of the 2017 season against Taylor (Ind.) on Saturday, as the Bulldogs shutout the Trojans in the first game 13-0 before another win over Taylor 10-4 in game two.

With the wins, Union starts their season off with a 2-0 record, while Taylor falls to 0-2 on the season.

Game One

Union starter Dolan Kunkel (JR/Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) hurled four complete innings, giving up only two hits while striking out two of the 13 batters he faced to claim his first win on the season. Austin Dingee (JR/Bay City, Mich.) would be the other pitcher on the mound, pitching three complete innings, while giving up three hits, no runs and striking out two of 11 batters.

That performance gave the Bulldogs offense the momentum it needed to get the job done, as Union wasted no time getting on the board with 2 runs scored in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Chris Lane (JR/Battle Ground, Wash.) would get things going with a single to short and later score on a batted ball by Daniel Neal (SO/London, Ky.). Joe Gaines (SO/London, Ky.) would too reach base on a bunt, and then would move the bulldogs up to two on a RBI by Ronnie Healy (SR/Jupiter, Fla.) single to make it 2-0.

Then in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs added nine runs to make it 11-0. After Zane Britton (SO/Greeneville, Tenn.) and J.C. Pena (SR/Perth Amboy, N.J.) walked, Michael Castillo (SR/New York, N.Y.) would hit a triple down center to score both runners. Castillo in scoring position would reach home on a bobble from Taylor's pitcher. After three pitching changes from the Trojans, the Bulldogs would come out of an 11-run lead.

The Bulldogs would get back-to-back home runs from Healy and Francisco Ogando (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) in the sixth, giving them a 13-0 lead.

Offensively, Castillo would go 2-for-3 with one run scored and four RBIs, while Healy would go 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Gaines and Ogando would also put up two runs apiece, while Gaines goes 2-for-4 at the plate and Ogando 2-for-3.

Game Two

In the second game, Taylor would start off the first inning with a run, but Union would tie the game at 2-all after three innings. The Bulldogs put together a three-run fourth to take the lead for good. Ogando lined a RBI double and later scored on a Pena single. Pena later came on thanks to a Trojan error, making it 5-2 after fourth.

Taylor tacked on a run in the top of fifth, but Union reeled off four more runs to open up a 9-4 cushion.

Union and Taylor each added a run a piece in the eight to make the final 10-4 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Despite giving up one run, pitcher John Hisel (SO/Lexington, Ky.) would get the win, only giving up one run on four hits with five strike outs.

Overall, Valentin would go 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, and Ogando would go 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.

Taylor was led by Josh Lane, who went 2-for-2 on the day with two runs scored.

Union will be back in action next Saturday as they host No. 19 Northwestern Ohio for doubleheader both Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. each day.
