MONTGOMERY, W.Va. – The Union College men's and women's swimming and diving team competed at West Virginia University Tech in their dual meet on Saturday with a combined score of 231-150.

The men's squad would fall 130-65, while the women fell 101-85. Out of the 22 events the Bulldogs brought home seven first-place finishes.

On the men's side, Ivar de Jong (SO/Almere, The Netherlands) would take first place in the 400 IM with a final time of 4:17.35 and a had 5:03.08 finish in the 500 freestyle taking home another first-place finish.

Iyas Shivji (SO/Nairobi, Kenya) received a first-place finish on the day in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51:77.

On the women's side, Eliska Melicharova (SR/Upice, Czech Republic) recorded a 26.65 win in the 50 freestyle followed by Anna Misiewicz (JR/Nassau, Bahamas) with a time of 27.11 to take first and second for the Bulldogs. Melicharova, Misievicz along with Elisabeth Kotmark (FR/Greve, Denmark), and Kellianne Holck (SR/Island Lake, Ill. ) the women will take the win for the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.84.

Susana Martinez (SR/ Colonial Heights, Va.) dominated the 200-yard butterfly finishing in first place with a time of 2:28.32. While Lara Kaufmann (SR/Schwerte, Germany) took home the win for the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:31.05.

"It was good to have the chance to see how we are swimming after a long break from competitions," said head coach Rafael Forti. "Our training is coming along and despite everyone being very tired and sore from this phase of our training cycle, we have managed to swim well in several events."

Union returns to action this weekend on Feb. 4 as the team gets set to host the King University for the final home meet of the season. The meet is scheduled for 1 pm.
