BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Both teams got off to fast starts, but it was No. 11 Georgetown (Ky.) which was able to continue the grind on its way to the 35-12 Mid-South Conference (MSC) East win over host Union College on Saturday.

The Tigers (6-1 overall, 4-0 MSC East) took the opening possession and drove 70 yards in seven plays to take the early 7-0 lead. Clay McKee hit J.J. Jude on a short pass, but Jude found a seam and covered the 27 yards to the end zone.

Union (3-4 overall, 2-1 MSC East) responded immediately. On the Bulldogs' first play from scrimmage, Alex Bell (JR/Daytona Beach, Fla.) hit a streaking Tyler Toombs (SO/Stone Mountain, Ga.) for a 69-yard touchdown strike. Unfortunately, the extra-point kick hit the upright, keeping the score at 7-6 with 11:38 to play in the first.

Late in the first, Georgetown extended its lead to 14-6 when McKee hooked up with Ross Cox for a 14-yard scoring pass.

The scoring slowed for a bit, but Union found the end zone once more midway through the second when Izayah Riettie (FR/Lakeland, Fla.) broke free for a 39-yard scamper. The Bulldogs went for the tie on the conversion, but the Bell's pass fell incomplete, keeping the score at 14-12.

Georgetown closed the half with two scores on two big runs. Jude busted loose for a 68-yard scoring sprint, and Zach Harris galloped 70 yards for a touchdown to put the Tigers up 28-12.

In the second half, the scoring nearly grinded to a halt. The game went scoreless in the third quarter, and Georgetown registered the half's only points with a McKee 4-yard touchdown pass to Bart Bell early in the fourth, making the final 35-12.

"Defensively, we made one adjusted and only allowed seven points in the second half, which is the best we've done against them in some time," said head coach Zak Willis.

In spite of allowing 35 points, the Union defense played well, especially in the second half. The Bulldog defense was kept on the field for nearly 38 minutes but surrendered only 401 yards in total offense.

Union registered 8.0 tackles for a loss, including 3.0 sacks. Serge Vita (SR/Pasadena, Calif.), who had eight total tackles, notched 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss of 11 yards. Harley Goins (JR/McColl, S.C.) registered a team-high 11 stops with Ryan Coleman (JR/Dacula, Ga.) and Justavious Robinson (FR/Alexander City, Ala.) collecting 10 tackles apiece.

Offensively, Union gained 285 yards in total offense. The Bulldogs' time on the field was limited to only 22:19. Bell completed 11-of-32 passes for 159 yards, and Timius Lowe (FR/Decatur, Ala.) led the ground game with 52 yards on six carries.

Bulldog Notes

  • Both teams were 2-for-5 on fourth down.
  • Third down proved to be the difference. Georgetown converted 11-of-20 third-down chances, while Union went 2-for-14.
  • This is the third game in a row Bell has thrown a touchdown pass of 69 yards or longer.
