BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College Department of Athletics has been named an NAIA Champions of Character Silver-Level Institution by the NAIA.
Every year, each NAIA institution and conference demonstrates their progress in pursuing character-driven athletics. The Champions of Character Scorecard measures growth in training, promotion, conduct in competition and commitment in five key areas with a possibility of 100 points. Institutions can be recognized as Champions of Character Five-Star Institutions at three different levels: Gold (90-100 points), Silver (75-89 points) and Bronze (60-74).
Institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earned points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions received points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
This year, 171 NAIA institutions earned the Five-Star Institution Award. Union is one of 72 to receive the silver distinction level.
Nine of the Appalachian Athletic Conference's 13 member schools earned recognition as Champions of Character Five-Star schools. The league was one of 18 conferences to be named a Champions of Character Five Star Conference.
