WALESKA, Ga. – The Union College baseball team opened Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play for the year on Saturday, dropping a pair of games against Reinhardt University. The Bulldogs fell 3-0 in game one before losing game two 1-0 in extra innings.

With the results, Union falls to 8-9 overall and 0-2 in AAC play, while Reinhardt moves to 15-5, 2-0 in the AAC.

Game One

A game that was fueled by strong pitching, defensive play presented a none existing offensive day from both teams, saw the Eagles take the first game in the three-game weekend series.

The Eagles starting pitcher, Blake Marbut had a day to remember as he not only shut out the Bulldogs but hurled a perfect-game which is the first in Reinhardt's history.

It was Reinhardt who took the early lead and never gave it up. The Eagles, who only recorded four hits of their own got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Eli Dickens RBI double scored Tyrus O'Neal to make it 1-0.

Then in the third, doubles by Daniel Rodriguez, Chap Lindstrom and Jacob Cagle added two more runs for Reinhardt and that gave Marbut all the momentum he needed on the hill to keep the Bulldogs off the board and take the game one 3-0 victory.

Game Two

In the second game, Union came out with a little more urgency offensively but still couldn't push a run across on the day.

The Bulldogs starting pitcher, Matt Hamons (SR/Willard, Ohio) pitched six impressive scoreless innings against a powerful Reinhardt offensive lineup before being replaced by Ryan Ziels (SO/Hamilton, Ohio). Hamons recorded six strikeouts and only gave up two hits in his 21 batters he faced.

Despite the hard fought battle, the Eagles were able to steal the second game in the bottom of the eighth, plating the winning run to capture the AAC doubleheader sweep.

Overall, Joe Gaines (FR/London, Ky.) paced the Union offensive going 2-for-3 from the plate, while Austin Boggs (SO/Hamilton, Ohio) and Ziels recorded the two other hits for the Bulldogs.

For Reinhardt, Brandon Moss led the Eagles with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and Luke Cathcart picked up the win on the hill.

Up Next

Union will take on Reinhardt tomorrow in a nine-inning game to wrap up the AAC opening weekend series. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Waleska, Ga.
