COLUMBIA, Ky. – Union senior Michael Davenport (SR/Delaware, Ohio ) is the recipient of the 2014-15 Mid-South Conference Men's Bowling Champions of Character award presented by Forcht Bank, MSC officials announced on Wednesday.

Davenport is strong in the classroom, holding a 3.56 grade point average and double majoring in biology and mass communications. Aside from academics, he is the president of Union's student government association and serves as a peer tutor and mentor to other individuals.

"I am confident in my leadership abilities and enjoy working with a group of people," Davenport said. "With my responsibilities on campus I continue to stay busy. I take every position I hold seriously and respect the people who are associated with them."

Union head bowling coach Chelsea Gilliam said Davenport has made a tremendous impact on the team.

"Michael rejoined the program last year after taking a year off and has brought a sense of leadership the guys were missing before," Gilliam said. He may not always be in the lineup, but he is always a teammate."

Davenport is active off campus taking initiative to help teach younger students in the community.

"I volunteer at a local elementary school four days a week," Davenport said. "I have also participated in countless other service programs such as recycling, home repairs and helping other athletic programs."

Through these activities, Davenport has learned the importance of responsibility and servant leadership. Davenport said all of these values help tremendously with his future ambitions.

"My goal is to get my masters in Higher Education Administration or College Student Personnel and give support to other people" Davenport said.

"I want to work on a college campus and give them opportunities which they never thought possible. College is a time for growth of the individual both academically and socially."

Davenport was selected by a vote of the Mid-South Conference institution's athletic directors. Other nominees for the Champions of Character Award included Campbellsville's Hudson Haynes, Cumberlands' Bradley Paynter and Lindsey Wilson's Dustin McMahon.
